Bone Party
Our lab had the honor of hosting a bone making party along with The Trillion Space in support of One Million Bones.
"One Million Bones is a fund raising art installation designed to recognize the millions of victims killed or displaced by ongoing genocides occurring on our watch."
This important project involves individuals everywhere making representations of bones that will be delivered to and installed on the National Mall in Washington D.C. in the Spring of 2013. The final installation seeks to flood the installation space with one million of these bones created by individuals around the country. The bone making party is an opportunity for groups to gather and make bones for this project and to learn more about what can be done.
We setup tables in the lab with papier-mache materials, samples of made bones, and illustrations of bones. One of the wonderful things about the bone making party is the opportunity for people to be creative and to hand-make things together. We certainly saw some creative bones being produced!
Along with bone making, The Trillion Space was on hand to lend their expertise by live silk-screening shirts in support of the project. Special thanks to AP and Gibbs who let people customize their shirts and answered questions about the silk-screening process.
Naomi Natale, the founding artist and director of the project, was on hand to share her passion with the volunteers who came to make bones and support the project. On Friday (June 11), Naomi had presented at the Sparkplug Talks and we will have the video of her presentation available soon. To say the project is ambitious is an understatement. Naomi points out that completing the project in three years requires over 900 bones being made every day. The energy and determination this project requires is daunting but if you have the opportunity to meet Naomi you will understand that she is sustained by her passion and belief in our ability to impact ongoing genocide, in short to save lives.
Fab Lab ABQ is pleased to support One Million Bones through the production of lavender sachets silk-screened by Trillion Space and hand-sewn and assembled by Fab Lab ABQ. The collaboration with Trillion also resulted in producing packs of iron-on transfers. These are now available through our Made ABQ store.
We want to thank everyone who stopped by, made bones, donated to the project, and bought shirts. We encourage you to stop by their office at 119 Gold Avenue SW here in Albuquerque or if you are outside of our local area please visit their website to learn how you can support the project.
